The mission of the UN Environment Office for West Asia is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples in the West Asia region to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.
Its major function is to coordinate UN Environment programme of work in the region, and act as the link between the 12 countries it covers in the region and UN Environment’s various units and centers.
In addition to the 12 Member States, the Regional Office for West Asia collaborates with major groups and stakeholders, private sector, youth and other stakeholders to help bridge the science and policy gaps by keeping the state of the environment under review, identifying environmental threats at an early stage, developing sound environmental policies, strategies, legislation and supporting countries successfully implement these policies.
The regional office is located in Beirut, Lebanon and has a complement of experts who advise on environmental machinery and technical requirements, review project proposals, and recommend action by governments and other organizations.
