Buildings and construction

UNEP works with partners to sustainably transform the buildings and construction sector to limit its environmental impact, as well as contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Buildings are a heavyweight for climate action, responsible for around 37 per cent of energy and process-related CO2 emissions and over 34 per cent of energy demand.

UNEP, as the host of the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) secretariat, facilitates deep cooperation among buildings and construction stakeholders and aligns them behind a common vision: A zero-emission, efficient and resilient buildings, and construction sector. UNEP is also leading the implementation of the “Transforming the Built Environment through Sustainable Materials”, which aims at promoting circularity approaches in the built environment by creating of enabling frameworks for the responsible acquisition of building materials.
