More than 70% of all food produced is consumed in cities, and much of it becomes waste, negatively impacting the environment and contributing to climate change.
Food consumption is one of the largest sources of urban material flows, carbon emissions, and environmental footprint. Cities offer the perfect environment for testing innovative solutions to reduce pressure from food systems on nature, and promote sustainable urban development. UNEP supports cities in achieving progress on the SDG 12.3 target of halving food waste by 2030 and promotes the integration of urban and peri-urban agriculture in cities to promote food security.
