UNEP in Asia Pacific
The Asia and the Pacific region is home to 60 per cent of the global population, accounts for over 40 per cent of the global economy and is home to nearly 70 per cent of the world’s poor. Geographically, it ranges from fragile Small Island Developing States in the Pacific to populous and vast plains of South and Southeast Asia, as well as the mountainous, land-locked countries of Central Asia. A growing population and booming economies are exerting considerable strain on the region’s environmental resources.

In Asia Pacific, UNEP operates through its Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific and works in 41 countries in the region. UNEP works with governments, local authorities, civil society, other UN entities, regional and international institutions, as well as the private sector to develop and implement cleaner and safer policies and strategies that catalyze efficient use of the region’s natural assets and reduces degradation of the environment and risks to both humans and the environment.
