The focus areas of the sustainable development goals (SDGs), and how sustainable consumption and production (SCP) will be addressed in them, is currently under negotiation by Member States. The High Level Panel of Eminent Persons on the post-2015 development agenda have reaffirmed that the adoption of SCP in a world of limited resources is an essential requirement for sustainable development. They also mentioned that "the MDGs fell short by not integrating the economic, social, and environmental aspects of sustainable development as envisaged in the Millennium Declaration", and by not addressing the need to promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production.
This side event will provide the opportunity for a dialogue between member states and stakeholders aiming at demonstrating the relevance of SCP to SDGs and Post-2015 development agenda, presenting potential SCP targets for SDGs, and showcasing how the Rio+20 - 10YFP can support the SDGs implementation. The expected outcomes of the are enhanced evidence on the universality and centrality of SCP to the SDGs through research findings, increased information on SCP benefits for SDGs, and on proposals on relevant targets and practical cases on SCP for SDG and increased knowledge of MinistersÂ´ and senior officialsÂ´ on the 10YFP as globally approved Rio+20 mechanism to support the achievement of sustainable development, and therefore, its potential contribution to the SDGs.
