Small Island Developing States (SIDS) continue to face multiple challenges and following Rio+20, the international community reaffirmed their commitment to take urgent and concrete action to address the vulnerability of small island developing States, including through the sustained implementation of the Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA) and the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation (MSI), and underscore the urgency of finding additional solutions to the major challenges facing small island developing States in a concerted manner so as to support them in sustaining momentum realized in implementing the Barbados Programme of Action and the Mauritius Strategy and achieving sustainable development. The Third International Conference on SIDS will be organised in September 2014 in Samoa to further review the implementation of BPOA and MSI, to identify emerging challenges and opportunities. The discussion is the contribution to the post-2015 Development Agenda. Through the preparatory process to date, SIDS specific challenges and opportunities for sustainable development have been discussed in order to highlight and launch SIDS specific genuine and durable partnerships.
The objectives of the side event are to highlight SIDS specific challenges and opportunities for sustainable development and to discuss SIDS specific partnerships which UNEP can assist and contribute. A report of the side event will be prepared and shared with the UN Inter-Agency Consultative Group on SIDS and UNEP Committee of Permanent Representatives.
