The establishment of a UNEP Office in April 2004 in Brazil will help UNEP respond more effectively to the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation, drawn up two years ago at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), with regard to developing new and coordinated approaches and mechanisms for achieving sustainable development focusing on emerging themes of local and sub-regional interest.
The new office will work closely with the Ministry of the Environment, Ministry for the Cities, the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) and other ministries, international agencies and non-governmental organizations in implementing its programmes.
The office will contribute to the process of horizontal cooperation and integration of environmental agendas currently under development by the MERCOSUR group (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay) as well as associated members Chile and Bolivia.
