Special Session on Oil and Gas Exploration and Development in the Western Indian Ocean region
31 October 2013
Maputo, Mozambique

Introduction

We are pleased to invite all participants to the Eighth WIOMSA Symposium to a Special Session on Oil and Gas in the Western Indian Ocean: Opportunities and Potential Risks to Coastal and Marine Environment organized by WIOMSA, University of Eduardo Mondlane (UEM) and the Nairobi Convention Secretariat (UNEP) at the Girassol Indy Congress Hotel & Spa, in Maputo, Mozambique on 31st October 2013 from 14:00 to 17:30.

The main objective of the Session is to initiate dialogue amongst different actors involved in the oil and gas industry, including governments, scientists and NGOs, to reflect on how the countries in the Western Indian Ocean region could simultaneously benefit from oil and gas resources while maintaining environmental integrity and other benefits to the people, in line with Decision
CP7/8 of the Seventh Conference of Parties to the Nairobi Convention.

Experts in oil and gas including government representatives, regional and international experts will discuss keynote presentations that consider the opportunities and impacts of oil and gas exploration and development, and environmental management for sustainable coastal development. The expected outcome of the session includes a set of recommendations at technical and policy levels that countries in the region need to address including proposed actions.
