    About International Year of Youth

“The International Year is about advancing the full and effective participation of youth in all aspects of society,” UN Focal Point on Youth Nicola Shepherd said. “We encourage all sectors of society to work in partnership with youth and youth organizations to better understand their needs and concerns and to recognize the contributions that they can make to society.”

In its resolution proclaiming the Year, the General Assembly called on governments, civil society, individuals and communities worldwide to support activities at local and international levels to mark the event.

Under the theme ‘Dialogue and Mutual Understanding,’ the Year aims to encourage dialogue and understanding across generations and promote the ideals of peace, respect for human rights and freedoms, and solidarity.

Official logo and slogan for the International Year of Youth now available

The United Nations Programme on Youth of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) is pleased to launch the official slogan and logo for the International Year of Youth (12 August 2010 - 11 August 2011).

The General Assembly proclaimed the Year in its resolution 64/134 under the theme Dialogue and Mutual Understanding.

In searching for a slogan that would capture the theme of the Year, the UN Programme on Youth (DESA) consulted young people through an online call for suggestions on Facebook.  Nearly 500 suggested slogans were submitted by youth from around the world, which led to the development of the official slogan: Our Year. Our Voice.

To design the official logo, the Graphic Design Unit in the Department of Public Information drew upon the theme, slogan and spirit of youth as sources of inspiration.

The logo represents all of these elements in that it signifies dialogue across the world through the imagery of a globe with vibrantly-coloured speech bubbles.  The logo has been very well received by partners, and especially by youth via the Facebook page.

Governments, organizations, groups and individuals are invited to download and attach the official logo to promotional materials for activities celebrating the International Year of Youth.

For those interested in doing so, please follow the Logo Use Guidelines and submit a signed waiver of liability form to the UN Programme on Youth at youth@un.org.
