Due to UNEP’s growing role in South Sudan, the organization has provided critical policy guidance to the Government of South Sudan and key ministries on new environmental policies and legislation, such as the draft Environmental Bill, and on compliance with multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs). The enactment of the Environment Bill will set the basis for sustainable development in South Sudan.

UNEP will continue to provide this guidance, through timely liaison, to key government ministries and institutions.

UNEP is also leading the integration of environmental concerns in the UN Humanitarian response in South Sudan through introduction of ''Environmental Marker'' as a planning tool for projects funded from the humanitarian fund . The Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) brings aid organizations together to jointly plan, coordinate, implement and monitor their actions.
