   GC Today - 19 February 2012

 

The Global Major Group and Stakeholder Forum (GMGSF) of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) was held on 18 and 19 of February 2012 at the UN compound in Nairobi, Kenya. The annual meeting, which is held in conjunction with UNEP's Governing Council/ Global Ministerial Environment Forum, brought together over 150 delegates of major groups from civil society who attended a series of open dialogues centered around the themes of the Green Economy and international environmental governance - the focus of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, or Rio+20, that will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June.

A 40th Anniversary celebratory run for the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in partnership with the Paul Tergat Foundation and the Athletics Kenya attracted top Kenyan runners and was held in conjunction with a Fun Run of five kilometers where over 1,000 participants joined in. Amina Mohamed, UNEP's Deputy Executive Director congratulated the athletes and presented the winning prize to Half-Marathon Winners, Victor Kipchirchir and Mercy Chemutai.

   GC Today - 20 February 2012

 

The 12th Special Session of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GCSS-12/GMEF) opened today at the United Nations Office in Nairobi, Kenya. Delegates convened in the morning for the opening ceremony, followed by consideration of organizational matters, and a policy statement by UNEP Executive Director, Achim Steiner.

In the afternoon, delegates convened for ministerial consultations on the topic of "Environmental change and global responses in 2012". The panel discussion was followed by a dialogue with the former Executive Directors of UNEP.

The Committee of the Whole (COW) discussed organizational matters and began addressing draft decisions.

The 12th Special Session of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GCSS-12/GMEF) entered its second day at the United Nations Office in Nairobi, Kenya.

Breakfast events included an open dialogue with the secretariat of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNSCD) and a meeting of the Network of Women Ministers and Leaders for the Environment.

Ministerial Consultations addressed environment and development items through a series of roundtable discussions with Civil Society Representatives on the topic of "Green Economy in the context of Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication"

The Committee of the Whole (COW) addressed environment and development issues.

In the afternoon, special events focused on "Securing the Green Economy Development through Ecosystem Management", and "The African launch of the International Year of Sustainable Energy For All".

The 12th Special Session of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GCSS-12/GMEF) entered its third day at the United Nations Office in Nairobi, Kenya.

Breakfast events included a major groups and stakeholders meeting on sustainable development goals, and a briefing on the report of the High-level Panel of the UN Secretary-General on Global Sustainability.

Ministerial Consultations including a moderated plenary discussion on Rio+20 and beyond, and the Committee of the Whole (COW) addressed the adoption of the report and conclusions. Special events on sustainable consumption and production for a systemic change: from Rio to Rio+20 and beyond, and sustainable development goals (organized by the Government of Colombia) took place in the afternoon, as will a presentation and demonstration on UNEP-Live: Keeping the future state of the world environment under review.

The closing GCSS-12/GMEF plenary took place in the afternoon when the President's Summary on the outcome of ministerial consultations was introduced. Delegates adopted seven decisions on: accounting, financial and administrative arrangements between UNEP and the MEAs; enhancing cooperation and coordination with the chemicals and wastes cluster; a consultative process on financing options for chemicals and wastes; the world environment situation; IEG; sustainable consumption and production; and the UNEP 40th Anniversary Ministerial Statement.
