Opportunity Green awarded Don Cheadle as Eco Maverick
The Fifth Annual Business Conference Opportunity Green awarded the 2nd Annual Eco Maverick Award for Global Environmental Leadership to UNEP Ambassador and award-winning actor, author and producer Don Cheadle. The award was given by Opportunity Green CEO Founder Karen Solomon and OG Executive Strategist Sherry Simpson Dean, honoring his exemplary service and commitment to environmental sustainability as well as human rights. Cheadle was named UN Environmental Program Ambassador in a prestigious ceremony in Rwanda on World Environment Day 2010.
Following the award ceremony, Don Cheadle joined Simpson and UN Foundation Senior Advisor Leslie Cordes and Jeremy Heimans CEO/Founder of Purpose a social enterprise who is recipient of the 2010 Ford Foundation Visionary Award. The keynote panel kicking off the two day conference included a powerful statement from Cheadle on the importance of relating to sustainable change as an evolutionary process. He added that it is crucial to keep momentum up.

Don Cheadle who also holds the distinction of being a UN goodwill Ambassador, became a leader in the movement to stop genocide in Darfur following his academy-award nominated role in Hotel Rwanda. Cheadle co-authored a book on the issue entitled Not on Our Watch--The Mission to End Genocide in Darfur. As an environmentalist he walks the walk. He owns a solar powered home and as an avid golfer, he is now the spokesperson for Dixon Earth a company that recycles golf balls--the first of its kind.

Sophisticated design aesthetics overseen by Gensler Architects, and including 40+ sustainable design companies prove that events can be both “green” and stylish. Eco-friendly Los Angeles Center Studios, home of Mad Men, set the stage for inviting lounge spaces and a central design feature, the “tornado”, concept by Gensler and made with over 1 ton of reclaimed wood provided by American Reclaimed Product Supply Company and built by Carrey Brothers Construction (also offered in 3D augmented reality on smartphones and tablets by daqri).
Boxman Studio’s super hip, solar-powered lounge, made from a recycled shipping container featured a re-creation of American Apparel’s vertical model of manufacturing, where organic t-shirts were sewn from scratch on-site by master sewers and given to attendees as a memento. Presenting sponsor, BMW Group, gave a first glimpse of the new ActiveE electric vehicle while live simulcast was offered throughout the venue by Dell. A breath-taking art gallery featured local artists who use sustainable, recycled and environmentally friendly materials.
Stage, Sound and Lighting partner Production Resource Group (PRG) bathed the venue in energy efficient LED lighting with the debut of the OHM Light, developed by PRG in conjunction with Gekko Technology. Town & Country Rentals outfitted the sound stage, where conference sessions were held, and interactive exhibitor hall. Programs printed on Domtar EarthChoice paper by Design Printing LA and rePete ChicoBag gift bags made from upcycled water bottles were all the rage.
The OG after-party was hosted by SouthWest airlines offering a Taste of LA with LA's best sustainable fare from local restaurants such as Border Grill, Veggie Grill, La Poubelle and organic cocktails by locally made GreenBar Collective. Opportunity Green Business Conference offsets 100% of carbon emissions and diverts 85% waste from landfill making in one of the lowest conference footprints.
