International Year of Sustainable Energy for All
Nairobi, 12 January 2012 UNEP Goodwill Ambassador Gisele BŁndchen Backs 'Small is Beautiful' Energy Solutions on First Official Fact-finding Mission to Africa
In recognition of the importance of energy access for sustainable economic development and
supporting achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, the United Nations General
Assembly has designated 2012 as the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All.
Please visit the IYSEA official website for more.
Because almost every human activity has an energy requirement, UNEP's energy work aims at changing the way we produce and use energy, mainly by bringing a 'sustainability' dimension into energy sector decision-making and investment. Whilst focusing on reducing emissions of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change, activities emphasize the human dimension to create opportunities for development, such as through a transition to a resource efficient and green economy. This approach allows the co-development benefits of clean energy sources and efficient energy use to support the attainment of the MDGs and has the potential to improve the lives of millions of people around the world.
