Mapping out trade union initiatives on the environment and sustainable development globally
Sustainlabour and UNEP conducted an extensive survey to identify and collect existing practices and literature on labour and the environment within trade unions’ organizations. Selected experiences will be replicated or adapted to different regions/countries/workplaces.
Adapting and replicating trade union experiences
At this stage, four projects have been selected for adaptation and replication:
- Sound and sustainable management of chemicals:
- Global Pesticides Project in French speaking countries in Africa
- Evaluation of environmental risks in Hotel facilities
- Climate change adaptation and mitigation:
- Transportation and sustainable mobility to work
- Training on renewable energy for construction workers in Peru
The Sustainlabour Information System: an innovative and comprehensive platform to collect and share knowledge on trade union initiatives on the environment and sustainable development
(adapted from Sustainlabour’s website, http://www.sustainlabour.org)
The trade union initiatives collected have been compiled into an online database, accessible through Sustailabour’s website. The Sustainlabour Information System aims at gathering a large number of initiatives on the environment and sustainable development, involving in particular trade unions but also other civil society organizations –NGOs, academia, etc.
The objective is to provide a global overview of these initiatives, to raise awareness on environmental and sustainable development issues, and share knowledge/experiences on which other stakeholders can build to develop their own initiatives.
The database encompasses a variety of initiatives, ranging from training programmes and seminars, to trade unions policy resolutions, campaigns, collective agreements, ruling proposals, trade union publications/bulletins/press releases, to mention but a few. The database provides general, basic information on each initiative as well as contact details. Related documents, logos and photos can also be posted through the website.
Any input is more than welcome. No project is too modest or no information too general: all of them are valuable!
