Tbilisi +35 Intergovernmental Conference on Environmental Education for Sustainable Development, organized by the Government of Georgia in partnership with UNESCO and UNEP will bring together over 300 delegates from all parts of the world to carry forward the global appeal for education as a means for sustainable development set forth by the 1977 declaration.

The 1977 Tbilisi Declaration established a framework for formal and non-formal EE activities at the local, national, and international levels and provided “fundamental principles for the proposals” in Agenda 21 and a set of other documents and global initiatives that followed.

Tbilisi+35 commemorates the 1977 Tbilisi Declaration and 35 years of global educational efforts toward a sustainable world.
By building upon the existing legacy, the Conference intends to

  • Enhance international co-operation to make the best use of global educational efforts in humanity’s struggle for a sustainable existence and its smooth transition toward a green economy
tbilisi+35
  • Provide a platform for decision makers to interact with UN-led forums devoted to EE and ESD
  • Take stock of the implementation of major national, regional and international EE agendas up to now, and to define pathways beyond.

Tbilisi+35 will feature a series of high-level plenary and work sessions, which will lay the groundwork for reinforced concerted global action on education and sustainable development. The outcome of the Conference will be a document that outlines a new global environmental education agenda beyond 2015 to meet current needs and future challenges.
