|Description:||Interactive Panel Discussion on Detoxifying Development: How strengthened sound management of chemicals and wastes contributes to sustainable development|
The global community attaches great importance to the sound management of chemicals and waste for the protection of human health and the environment. At the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002 governments agreed to achieve, by 2020, that chemicals are used and produced in ways that lead to the minimization of significant adverse effects on human health and the environment. The 2020 target was further recognized in the Rio+20 outcome "The Future We Want", and was extended to cover hazardous wastes.
The objective of the interactive panel discussion is to demonstrate how the sound management of chemicals and waste is directly linked to a broad spectrum of sustainable development issues, such as health, sustainable consumption and production, food and agriculture, water, and employment and how the global policy on chemicals and wastes management provides opportunities for the realization of benefits for sustainable development at the global, regional and national levels. The side-event will build on the findings contained in the Global Chemicals Outlook, GEO5 as well as relevant WHO studies on the linkages between sound management of chemicals and wastes and human health. The outcome of the panel discussion will be a summary report to be available to the wider audience. The key messages of the discussion will be conveyed by the keynote speaker or a panel member to the ministerial dialogue.
