In Africa as part of the concerted efforts to raise environmental awareness and mobilize the larger community in
preserving the environment for a better future, the Regional Office for Africa decided to work closely with some
selected countries in Africa by contributing to the organization of World Environment Day at national level.
The aim is to help bridge the gap between UNEP and these countries, especially as UNEP-ROA has directed its
activities to put more emphasis on the Bali Strategic Plan and environmental awareness through our two major
outreach events, World Environment Day and Clean up the World Campaign. These countries include Mali, Tunisia,
Lesotho, Swaziland, Burundi, Burkina Faso, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana and Kenya.

In Algeria, the Friends of the Environment produced a radio programme for kids on the theme of World Environment Day, "Green Cities - A Plan for the Planet". The programme explained the purpose and objectives of WED, while also underlining the problems arising from rapid urbanisation and the role each of us can play in resolving them. A quiz was also organised on the same theme and prizes awarded to five lucky winners.
Friends of the Environment plans to continue to work towards sustainable urbanisation in the new school year, by creating awareness among the highest number of children and getting as many as possible actively involved.

A Grey Water Recycling system under the CARE campaign initiative – (Conservation of Water Resources,
Addition to the supply of water, and Re-use or recycling of wastewater) was launched to mark WED 2005.
A Grey water recycling system is a wastewater system that diverts, collects and treats the Grey water
for reuse. The water situation in Botswana is at a critical stage and the Grey Water System is the most
practical method to compliment the government's initiative for water conservation. Research has shown
that the Grey Water System can reduce domestic water consumption by up to 60 percent. The Grey Water
System conforms to the 2005 World Environment Day global theme of "Greener cities; Plan for the future)".
The installation of the Grey Water System is meant to give Botswana an opportunity to save water on a

Also joined the international community to commemorate
the 32nd World Environment Day under the theme "Green Cities, Plan for the Planet". Activities marking the
day in Yaoundé were characterized by clean up campaigns, a round table conference and tree planting around
the ministerial building of the Ministry of Environment and Nature Protection. Presiding over activities
jointly organized by the Ministry of Environment and Nature Protection and the World Wild Fund for Nature
(WWF), the Secretary General of the Ministry stressed the importance of the theme as well as trees in urban
space and the necessity to adopt a balanced approach for the development of the town taking into account
environmental preoccupations. He called on everybody to join the ministry and other organizations in protecting
the environment. The Director of conservation at WWF unveiled that WWF has taken an engagement with the Ministry
of Environment and Nature Protection to be their biggest partner in environmental protection. WWF also donated
220 books intended for children to the Ministry of Environment and Nature Protection. The books will contribute
to environmental education and natural resources. An environmental club known as the "The little angels of the
environment" spiced the day with poems, slogans, songs and recitations on environmental education and
sensitization. A quiz was also organized for students, youths and children on environmental issues and prizes
were awarded to the participants. Some of the round table discussions focused on the role of trees in the town,

ETHIOPIA
Addis Ababa
World Environment Day has been celebrated every year in Ethiopia for the past eleven years. This was pointed out on 3 June 2005 at the
first of several events to mark the day and week. The global theme was adjusted from Green
Cities: Plan for the Planet! to a national version Green and Clean Cities and Towns.
The WED celebrations began on 3 June with a press conference organized by the Environmental
Protection Authority (EPA). The conference started with educational environmental songs by
students from the Yemaneberhan Elementary School followed by a winning poem by Theodros Eshete.
The pupils were provided with a special uniform and eco-bags sponsored by the UNEP Addis Ababa
Office. Mr. Solomon Jigra, from the Addis Ababa EPA, delivered the opening speech and the
messages of the UN Secretary-General Mr. Kofi Annan and the Executive Director of UNEP,
Dr. Klaus Toepfer were distributed in Amharic.
On the afternoon of 3 June 2005, the Clean and Green Addis Ababa Society (CGAAS), organized a
workshop which began with a brief explanation by a representative from the EPA on the existing
problems, regulations and strategies related to river cleaning and greening riversides. He
demonstrated ways of protecting the river and its surroundings - some of which are service
controlled. This can be achieved by improving areas for vegetation and parks, pollution
prevention by improving swamps and controlling the waste thrown into the river, treatment
control by organizing a cleaning group and creating awareness by teaching the community at
large how to protect and keep the rivers and their surroundings clean and green. Finally model
sites where cleaning had been carried out, some green sites, wastes used for biogas and
natural fertilizers, and places with fences to protect areas from pollution were shown.
The highpoint of the workshop was the presentation of prizes to the winning entries in a
competition for designing a rehabilitation plan for the Kebena River, which should become
truly "blue" when the project is finalized. The winning entry was by the ABBA Architects and
AG Consultation, who made short presentation and showed pictures of the Kebena River after the
clean up project was completed. They divided the river into five sections from the Entoto
Mountains to the Akaki River, the site of a proposed Sport Park. This entry and two others
were presented certificates and monetary prizes from GTZ totaling US$10,000. Other entries
received certificates for meritorious participation. Mr. Gerhard Mai of GTZ and Dr. Eyob
Kamil, acting President of CGAAS, presented the awards.

Joined the international community in commemoration
of the World Environment Day this year, on Sunday 5th June, 2005. Parliament commemorated World Environment
Day with Members acknowledging the need to protect the environment from all forms of hazards. Environment and
Science Minister, Ms. Christine Churcher, told the house that the importance of sustainable cities and
communities in national development cannot be over emphasized. This, she said, calls for the provision of
the required financial support to back our political will and commitments to enable the Ministry, its
Agencies and Departments to tackle the problems headlong. "Any inaction will only succeed in "BROWNING" our
living environment, to the detriment of our survival on earth." Other activities included a Regional quiz
among some selected Senior Secondary Schools, Radio / TV Talk Shows, Media activities and Avenue Tree Planting.
The celebrations were climaxed with a national durbar at the Mawuli Old Park at Ho in the Volta Region, on
Monday 6th June. Apart from the national durbar, the event was celebrated in all the other regions of the country.
The objectives for this campaign were to promote a culture of tree planting among children, schools and
communities, and to send signal to government and the public that positive action is necessary to save the
environment. The support of industry in the sponsorship of schools and communities for this laudable initiative
went a long way in the nation's reforestation programme.

This year’s World Environment
Day (WED) activities were marked by a vast variety of lively, vibrant and artistic
events on the UN compound and at schools, in local communities, at and near roundabouts,
at cultural institutions, universities and in the Karura and Aberdares Forest, just to
name a few. As announced in the June issue of Tidbits the Arts for the Environment
approach to WED came to another peak this year: painted Metro Shuttle buses were
driving around the city with colourful messages on this year’s WED theme artistically
interpreted by Kenyan painters and produced during a busy weekend at the GoDown Arts
Centre. Kuona Trust Artists painted 5 Metro Shuttles thanks to the generous support
of Kenya Bus Company and Crown Berger Paints who, for the second year in a row, have
offered buses and donated enough paints for the creative visualisation of this year’s
WED message: Green cities! Look out for them!... Please click here for more

Kikwetu Association, a
young artists and journalists’ organisation based in Nairobi made a considerable
green change in the city by pulling all their creativity and energy together to
make WED a special day of planting trees and raising awareness about the environment
through art. Kikwetu organised a lively and colourful event starting the day with a
clean up along the road and a tree planting happening between Muthaiga and Panagani
Roundabouts in Nairobi. Assisted by youth groups and local residents more than 100
artists planted 100 Nandi Flame tree seedlings along the road! To ensure the
survival of the tree seedlings and their regular watering in the coming months
Pangani youth groups agreed to collaborate with Kikwetu Association and help
with the watering.
Artists, invited guests and the public were entertained at the National
Theatre with an afternoon of performances, poetry and music around the realities
of the environment, green and grey cities as well as plastic waste. Kikwetu is
ready to take up the challenge in the future together with UNEP and many other
partners and engage local communities in planting trees, environmental education
and awareness raising through visual and performing arts in order to make a
visible change towards a greener and healthier city. Please click here for more

The city of Kisumu hosted the national event.
UNEP-Regional Office for Africa, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources
organized a week long activities involving youth groups, school children, environmental groups, and the
general public throughout the country. Activities to mark World Environment Day 2005 included:
An Essay, Art and Photographic competition among schools nation wide, in relation with the theme for this
year. The competition aimed at raising environmental awareness among the children and youth and creating a
better understanding of the impacts of human activities their environments. It built on partnerships with
schools and community organizations to spread environmental awareness and good practices in caring for our
planet. Participants wrote essays, and painted environmental violations within their communities while
photos depicting similar situations were entered in the contest. Best entries were exhibited at a special
prize giving ceremony on 2 June 2005 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Nairobi. Winners of UNEP 2005
International Children Painting Competition in Africa were also recognized at that special ceremony
"Greening Nairobi: A Community Responds": this exhibition took place at the Intercontinental Hotel on 2 June
2005, with a focus on community response to urban environmental issues through activities such as recycling
and promotion of renewable energy. Tree planting at the Aberdares Range Forest, as part of the Sustainable Consumption Project. The initiative,
backed by bodies including the Kenya Government's Forest Department, the Kijabe Environment Volunteers and
the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is part of the Responsible Consumer Initiative through which
UNEP plants sufficient indigenous trees to offset its use of reams of paper at its headquarters here in
Nairobi. For the past four years, over 7,000 trees have been planted in rehabilitation of degraded catchment
areas in the southern part of the Aberdares Range Forest.
UNEP staff members continued their effort to thank their host city and 'give back' through a variety of
activities. The Kikwetu Association, a Nairobi based non- profit making artists entity aimed at developing
cultural exchange programmes within Kenya, with the support of UNEP organized a tree planting event between
Pangani and Muthaiga Roundabout on Thika Road in Nairobi involving artists and the local community. In
addition, local events had a particular focus on reducing plastic waste. In keeping with this theme, UNEP
staff members worked with local communities in Mathare to clean up plastic waste and put it to good use: it
is meant to become part of a work of art. Inspired by the popular UNEP children's book Theo and the Giant
Plastic Ball, community groups from Mathare, together with local artist Omega Ludenyi, constructed a large
metal globe, filled with plastic waste. The Monument was erected at the Muthaiga-Mathare roundabout.
In a separate initiative, Nairobi's school children had an opportunity to participate in WED activities and
learn more about the environment through the unique "Theo Goes Out" project. UNEP staff members and volunteers
read Theo and the Giant Plastic Ball at a number of schools in many different areas throughout the city.
In Kisumu, activities included a publicity caravan from Nairobi via Naivasha, Nakuru, Kericho and Kisumu on 4th
June 2005, Tree planting, Clean up within Kisumu City, Environmental exhibitions by various institutions, Radio
programmes especially in vernacular and the launch of 2004 State of the Environment Report (Draft) on
5th June 2005. Environment and Natural Resources minister Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka hit the nail on the head, when
he said that most of the environmental problems Kenya faces today are man-made and, therefore, human solutions
must be found. Kenya's Environment Minister Kalonzo Musyoka directed urban administrations within Lake Victoria
region to control untreated effluents being discharged into the water basin to protect human health and marine life.
In Nairobi, Kenyan Nobel Peace laureate, environmentalist Wangari Maathai, appealed to G-8 countries to support
initiatives that would sustain the world's environment-friendly programmes. Maathai, Kenya's Environment assistant
Minister and 2004 Nobel Prize winner singled out the Amazon and the Congo Basin as some of the forest ecosystems
that required special attention due to their valuable biodiversity and role in stabilizing the world climate.
She challenged researchers to seek environment-friendly alternatives, stressing the need for recycling of the
limited resources. She expressed concern over the continued logging and deforestation across the world, and
appealed for vigilance in the protection and conservation of forests. She said, this would go along way in
safeguarding the earth's resources, including clean water and fresh air which "are irreplaceable." Local
Government Minister Musikari Kombo also planted a tree at Nairobi's Arboretum to commemorate this year's World
Environment Day.

Juhudi Children's Club are pleased to run for the
third year running the Boogie Ride, an annual children’s train trip to Naivasha. This annual trip has been
scheduled over three years to coincide with the celebrations for the World Environment Day. Last year Juhudi
Children's Club planted trees at the Naivasha Railway Station with more than 900 schools participating.
The event received extensive coverage from Standard Newspapers, Kenya Television Network,
Metro-TV and Kenya Broadcasting Corporation.
This year they will support the theme "Green Cities" through their planned activities,
and use the avenue to encourage children and youth in Nairobi to take up the mantle of
conserving their urban habitation by greening it....so as to mop up and absorb the excess
Carbon Dioxide Beijing produced and emitted by our industries and motor vehicles. They will
make stops and plant trees in the major urban centers along the route, i.e. Nairobi, Kikuyu,
Limuru and Naivasha and provide every participating school with seedlings to plant in
their school compounds. A fashion show, usually done on the train will

MOZAMBIQUE
Maputo
Environment Minister, Luciano de Castro, celebrated
the Day by inaugurating a landfill for the disposal of industrial waste at Mavoco, in Boane district, about
20 kilometres from Maputo. The facility covers 50 hectares, but only six will be used in the initial stage.
The landfill is owned by the state, through the National Environment Fund (FUNAB), but it was paid for by the
aluminium smelter MOZAL. The landfill can process 3,500 tonnes of industrial waste a month. The disposal of
waste from industries in Maputo, Matola and Boane is thus solved for at least the next five years.

NAMIBIA
Windhoek
Environment and Tourism Deputy Minister Leon Jooste
said on the occasion of World Environment Day that it was imperative to create environmentally friendly cities
by providing clean drinking water, effective sanitation services and cleaner industries. He was the main speaker
at Windhoek's World Environment Day celebration, held at the Zoo Park in the heart of the city. He said his
Ministry, the City of Windhoek and the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry had initiated an environmental
management planning programme for the capital city. The programme would focus on cleaner production and urban
environment planning. He also announced that the Ministry was finalizing the Pollution and Waste Management Bill
and associated regulations. These pieces of legislation would make environmental assessment mandatory in all
developments, including construction projects in towns. A massive clean-up operation was also organized during
World Environment Week from June 4 to 10, at the dune belt between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. The Environmental
Management Section of the Municipality of Walvis Bay, in partnership with Dare Devil Adventures organized the
effort to get the dunes spotless. An appeal was also made to 4x4 vehicle owners to assist with the campaign by
offering to take volunteers into the dunes. Quad bikes were also made available to assist volunteers. The
Municipality awarded certificates of appreciation to all participants and donors.

NIGERIA
Abuja
In Nigeria where one of the most dreadful consequences
of urbanization is the problem of waste (industrial, domestic etc) management, WED 2005 was a good opportunity
to discuss the environment; social and public health effects of poorly managed waste system and highlight some
of the problems. These include: pollution of air by smog, especially where wastes are burnt openly as practiced
in most Nigerian cities and communities; the flooding of water ways; contamination of ground water with land
fills which have not been properly constructed, the obstruction of free flow of traffic when refuse is dumped
unto water ways, the prolific breeding of cockroaches and mosquitoes which can transmit diseases; industrial
pollution and deforestation. President Olusegun Obasanjo has implored Nigerians to remain committed to the
revegetation of the country's major cities and urban areas, hinting that the federal government would be
raising more than 51 million tree seedlings per annum to check desert encroachment. Speaking on the occasion
of the World Environment Day (WED) celebration in Abuja, the president warned that the degradation and depletion
of the nation's forest reserve base has major effects on other sectors of the economy, noting that this
administration was already addressing the problem by putting in place policies and programmes aimed at
"making the cities more urbane, more people friendly and environmentally sustainable".

Admiral Ecological Challenge
has the following objectives for World Environment Day:
1. Promote environmental conservation and high ethical standard in the environmental sphere.
2. Promote Admiral Environmental Care as a fore-front campaigner for conservation of the environment.
3. Removing the problem of seedling availability for tree planting programs in Nigeria.
4. Admiral eco-challenge is to serve as an exemplary project for the Northern Nigeria Government to emulate, in order to combat desertification.
In order to meet these objectives, Admiral Environmental Care will embark on an
ambitious plan of action. From 25 May 2005 they will take up an eco-challenge
programme which will create an impact in both rural and urban communities in
Nigeria and in the world as a whole. There will be an extension of the
"Education On Tree Planting" programme in the nine front line states of
Northern Nigeria. Admiral Environmental care will fund the production
of the extension posters, as well as television and radio programmes
on the serious environmental problems arising from the unchecked exploitation
of fuel wood and timber at rates beyond the levels of reforestation.
From 1June 2005, an Intensified Seedling Production programme will
start, involving selected states, local government and communities
in northern Nigeria: mainly Kastina, Sokoto, kebi, Bauchi Gusau
and Gombe. In addition to this, Admiral Environmental Care will
also encourage institutions, military and paramilitary
institutions, communities and individuals to start their
own nurseries. On 3 June 2005 Admiral will distribute
the seedlings in some selected filling stations in Nigeria
for sale. As the customer is buying fuel, he/ she is
invited to the station nursery to purchase a seedling
of choice. Records of sales will be made available to
our zonal office in Kaduna on 4 June 2005.
Finally there will be an incentive programme for outstanding performance.
In the early stages of the existing forestry project, farmers are given
cash incentives or other prizes for planting the required number of trees.
Many Nigerians do not plant trees now, because there is no encouragement.
Admiral Ecological Challenge will create special awards for
those that distinguish themselves in the Admiral Eco-challenge Programme.
This will be done at the communities, local government, states and national levels.

South Africa celebrated National Environment Week,
coinciding with International Environment Day today. The week was themed: "Our environment belongs to all who
live in it". As part of the celebrations in South Africa this year, the National Assembly debated the subject
with special emphasis on climate change and the Kyoto Protocol. Environmental Affairs and Tourism Minister
Marthinus van Schalkwyk also formally designated the first group of Environmental Management Inspectors (EMIs)
- the "Green Scorpions". The environmental inspectors are authorized with a range of enforcement powers varying
from routine inspections to search and seizure operations, setting up roadblocks and arresting suspects.
Launching the week, the Minister said it was appropriate that the UNEP chose this year's theme for World
Environment Day - 'Green Cities' - because cities consumed more than 75 percent of global resources. The Minister
also launched the first in a series of countrywide Clean Air Imbizo meetings in Boipatong, to engage with
communities worst affected by air pollution. South Africa also marked World Environment Day by "going green"
- a concept that is ill afforded in a country where for many putting food on the table is an everyday struggle.
While Cape Town's "green" strategy is well-known, South Africa's other major centers require the blueprint for
the green plan to be used to bring a more environmentally friendly approach to the rest of the country.
