Banks DIH Limited has a long history of supporting environmental oriented initiatives in Guyana. Following this tradition, the Company will be sponsoring two projects to commemorate WED 2006. The first is a WED Essay competition for the Annai Secondary School students in an Indigenous Community that is located over 200 miles from the Country’s capital – Georgetown. The Annai Secondary school houses a mixture of students from various villages within the Rupununi Region of Guyana.
The senior students of Annai Secondary School were invited to participate in this competition, which highlighted the importance of Guyana’s forests and by extension, the need to protect forest resources from desertification. The first to third place winners will receive the following prizes respectively: a solar panel power system, a brush cutter and a book certificate. A local company, Farfan and Mendes Limited, is cosponsoring the project and is providing 50% of the cost of the Solar Panel Power System and Brush Cutter and assisted in transportation into the remote village. These prizes were selected for the benefit of both the winning students as well as their respective villages.
The second project is the Company’s third annual World Environment Day Secondary Schools’ Banner Competition. This year’s WED theme, Deserts and Desertification has been selected as the overarching theme for this competition. As in previous years, each participating school will be given banner materials, paint and brushes for this project and the first to third place prizes will be of benefit to the entire school.
A contingent of the Company’s staff will be participating in a local “Green Walk”. The Company will also be donating a number of garbage bins to the Botanical Gardens. These bins will be painted and designed by the children of Banks’ employees.
