ALGERIA |
| Algiers |
One of the WED events held in Algeria was a workshop on desertification and sustainable development held in Ghardaia - a 2,000-year-old city in the Sahara desert. The workshop brought together experts who produced a call to action on the fight against desertification, which, in turn, led to the drafting of a charter on the world's deserts.
The Wali of Ghardaia showcased his town and its glorious past. With Amazir, Arab and tribal singers and dancers performing on the Wali's compound, the participants felt like they were walking through history.
In Algiers, the Global Desert Outlook - the first thematic report in the Global Environment Outlook series of environmental assessments by UNEP - was launched. It highlights the fragileness of desert environments and the increasing pressure they face from forces such as climate change and ill-considered human activity. UNEP used the occasion to launch a publication on tourism and the deserts.
On 5 June, the President of Algeria graced the main event where he delivered a speech on the Day's theme and presented the prizes to the winners of UNEP's International Children's Painting Competition and to the Algerian journalist who wrote the best articles on the WED theme.
Following the main event, the participants were taken to the City Centre where the people of Algiers celebrated the Day with a parade, marching bands, flower girls and a hot air balloon which carried the WED slogan Don't Desert Drylands!

To commemorate World Environment Day, the Association of Friends for the Environment produced a radio programme for kids on the Day's theme.
Once adapted for radio, the story Trishna and the Dream of Water - a UNEP children's publication - was told by young girls who each interpreted a section of the story. The broadcast ensured that hundreds of children were sensitized to the problems linked to desertification and learned how to fight against them through the example of this young girl who got her entire village motivated to take action.
The radio show also launched a competition, the winners of which were announced on World Desertification Day on 17 June 2006.
Friends of the Environment also participated in the WED awareness-building activities, organized from 3 to 5 June by the environment directorate of the Biskra Wilaya, by putting together an exhibition on desertification and arid areas.

To mark World Environment Day 2006, the Cameroon Association of School Administrators (CASA) has been working with the Nature Club of College D'Excellence through a project titled "Trees for Life: Grow a Tree". The project is to provide to school children information and the resources for planting trees and for understanding the importance of trees in the survival of life on this planet. This project includes a hands-on Tree Planting and Awareness Kit that allows children to germinate and plant a tree from seed and to care for it. On 6 June, a conference will be organized in the school campus thus giving the students an opportunity to share their thoughts and tree-growing experiences with other children, teachers CASA members and parents. The trees will be planted in the school. By focusing on children, it hoped that the Trees for Life project can educate a new "green generation" which will be well-prepared for the task of protecting Cameroon's environment in the 21st century - thus protecting dry lands, and becoming aware of the advancement of Deserts and Desertification.

ETHIOPIA |
| Addis ababa |
In 2006, Ethiopia maintained its tradition of celebrating World Environment Day at the national level.
The event was liberally dotted with white T-shirts and caps emblazoned with the WED logo and the names of the sponsors, i.e. Snap Computers, BGI Ethiopia, Coca-Cola, National Motors Company and UNEP. In addition to the EPA, organizers and sponsors of Addis Ababa planting her tree services included Red Fox Ethiopia Flower Farm, the Nile Basin Initiative/Nile Trans-boundary Environmental Action Plan Project and the Ethiopian Highland Spring Water Company.
At the venue, school children sang and participated in skits highlighting the negative effects of desertification and the importance of halting this widespread phenomenon. Following this, participants were invited to plant indigenous trees in the school compound where the celebration took place.
In the afternoon there was a WED ceremony at the National Palace, home of H.E. President Girma Woldegiorgis, himself a keen environmentalist for many decades.

On 5 June, World Environment Day, a delegation of UNEP staff members led by the Deputy Director, Division of Environmental Conventions, Mr. Alexander Alusa, went to the Mathare slums in Nairobi to donate textbooks to an informal school in the slum. The school, which caters for over 200 children, was selected by the World Environment Day Gigiri organizing committee members, as one of the beneficiaries of activities the committee had organized to mark the day. The textbook donation was an appropriate gift to the informal school, which does not receive any government support. During the gift presentation, Mr. Alusa urged the children to continue taking care of their environment and placed more emphasis on the importance of planting and taking care of trees and especially their importance in preventing desertification, which was part of this year's World Environment Day theme.

UNEP staff celebrated World Environment Day in a fun lunchtime event on 5 June. The celebrations included the opening of a photo exhibition (see separate entry), a raffle, and a live quiz in which staff members had the chance to test the knowledge of deserts and drylands. In order to raise awareness, large posters with the WED logos adorned the staff buses in the weeks leading up to the Day itself. The same posters were made available to Nairobi schools for use on their school buses.
In the run up to World Environment Day, as well as the following week, UNEP staff members and interns visited various schools around Nairobi to read environmental storybooks from UNEP's TUNZA series to children aged between 7 and 11 years. The old favorite 'Theo and the Giant Plastic Ball' was read to the pupils, alongside the new Deserts and Desertification-themed 'Trishna and the Dream of Water'. In addition to the storybook reading, a debating session with older children (12-13yr olds), was held, allowing the students to discuss the environmental issues surrounding World Environment Day.

The World Environment Day whose global theme this year was "Deserts and Desertification" and domesticated nationally as "Drylands Our Livelihood, Let's Save them", was celebrated in Nyando District on 14 June at Nyabondo high school. It was a day that the school and all the schools and community leaving within the division and the entire district joined hands together to focus on environment and reinforce its efforts once again to conserving it.
The event, organized by National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Kenya, was officiated by the Senior District Officer - Mrs.Wambi. On the material day, prior to the ceremony, guests planted ceremonial trees within the school. Almost 200-tree seedlings were planted. Other activities included songs, poems and plays with interludes from stakeholders / NEMA's collaborators giving a short talk on the profile of their organizations. The District Environment Officer-Nyando gave a talk on the "Environment and its Management in Kenya". The Senior District Officer then gave the keynote speech. She later presented environmental awards courtesy of NEMA-Nyando to individuals, NGOs and schools that took part in the event.
A football match, an Interhouse Competition, that crowned the whole event, later followed where the World Environment Trophy was presented. The World Environment Day trophy inter house tournament (either football or rugby) will be an annual event culminating in the celebration of World Environment Day.
