To coincide with World Environment Day, volunteers from the neighborhood will collect goods, computer parts and other electrical goods for recycling, from the homes of elderly, disabled and other disadvantaged, who are unable to access transport or means of disposal. The activity is sponsored by local (green) credit co-operation, MECU, to prevent on-going dumping of such goods in surrounding bush and parklands, due to lack of hard waste collection in the area and high costs of access to city dumps. This activity aims to promote awareness of WED, encourage recycling, assist low income and frail/elderly/disabled public housing community 'do the right thing' whilst engaging volunteers and 'community strengthening'. This is the second year that local residents have combined with MECU to offer this service to neighborhood for Word Environment Day.

Murwillumbah
Each year since 2000, the Murwillumbah Community Centre, Tweed Shire Council and the Caldera Environment Centre have worked together to run the shires World Environment Day Celebrations. The aim of this grass roots, community orientated festival is to celebrate the rich ecological diversity in the Tweed and to focus on the responsibility we all share in protecting it for future generations.

To give the international theme of 'Deserts and Desertification' a local perspective, our theme for this year is 'Total Catchment Management'. A three dimensional, solar powered, working model of a catchment will be showcased at this year's event, providing a visual demonstration of how our everyday activities impact on the natural environment. The catchment management model gives children and adults alike a greater appreciation of how our day-to-day activities influence the long-term health of the ecosystem. The event will be held at Knox Park in the heart of Murwillumbah 10am - 4pm on Sunday the 4 June 2006 Showcasing local talent and speakers, market stalls and information stalls.

Jishou, Hunan Province
To promote World Environment Day, The Research Institute of Anthropology and Ethnology and the Department of Environmental Sciences will clean up the construction trash that was carelessly dumped onto native vegetation on the Jishou University campus.

President You Jun of Jishou University has been contacted to stop the garbage burning on Jishou University's campus and to clean up the illegally dumped trash at this institution.

We have met with the Jishou City Environment Division to ask them to install recycling bins in Jishou City so that poor citizens do not have to dig through filthy garbage finding recyclables to sell for small change. This endangers their health and can expose them to tuberculosis.

We call on the local government to assist us in teaching citizens about sustainable development and to commemorate our life-giving environment on this day. We will inspire others to be responsible, committed and caring citizens so that China will develop sustainably and responsibly.

My minority graduate students and I regularly read UN Environmental Sabbath Programme Prayers for commemorating and restoring the Earth and to regard American Indian conservation ethics that consider future generations. We have one Earth and we are one family.

The UNDP Country Office in Kyrgyzstan and Information Network CARNet used a new Internet-based method to promote ecological issues on the occasion of World Environment Day. On 5 June, an exhibition of environmental caricatures and paintings, by the leading ecology expert in Central Asia and professor of geographic science, Dr. Emil Djaparovich Shukurov, was launched at UN House. Due to the great interest shown in this exhibition, CARNet network and portal www.caresd.net organized an Internet version of the exhibition, thus giving a wider audience an opportunity to see these unique works. CARNet staff, in close collaboration with various artists, carefully scanned and sorted out the huge pile of graphic materials and then exhibited them on their Internet portal. This initiative was undertaken at the same time as the exhibit opened.

Cartoons presented at the exhibit highlighted environmental issues, as well as the interlinkages between donor organizations, NGOs and state bodies. Shukurov, also Head of the leading central asian environmental NGO and member of several committees, managed to illustrate diversity and the correlation between the environment and human activity.

To observe World Environment Day, Stop Child Poverty Campaign will be planting trees at local facilities for underprivileged and at risk children. This action will benefit the children directly as it beautifies their environment, the planting of trees also helps to absorb the emissions from green house gases contributing to global warming which is the he most indiscriminate event the world will ever face. It will however affect some groups more than others; namely children living in poverty, who ironically contribute the least to its cause and yet are the most vulnerable.

To mark World Environment Day 2006, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is working with the member countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) to develop a series of environmental indicators for rice production in the region. When implemented, the indicators will allow each country to monitor and compare the environmental impact of its rice production with that of its neighbors, and either correct any problems or improve on existing practices. It's the first time anywhere in the world that a series of environmental indicators is being developed to monitor the impact of agricultural production on such a large regional basis. The five indicators being developed focus on the following environmental factors: production, biodiversity, pollution, land degradation, and water.

VIET NAM
Hanoi
On the occasion of World Environment Day 2006, a number of environmental activities such as meetings, workshops, contests, art performances, exhibitions, films, posters, brochures, among others were organized in local communities by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and the National Centre for Scientific and Technological Information (NaCeSTI).

Local authorities worked with the national and local mass media to introduce issues related to the country's land resources.

In some localities, farmers' associations were key networks to set up pilot models of land use and preservation. Local public organizations held and will continue to hold meetings and other activities to provide information and raise people's awareness of value of land in order to minimize the risk of desertification.

Measures to prevent desertification and to convert wastelands were highlighted at a meeting held by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front in Hanoi. Some of the measures being implemented to prevent desertification include increasing forest cover, speeding up the five million ha reforestation programme, using natural resources sustainably and reducing poverty in rural areas.

To mark the Day and to raise environmental awareness, the Vietnam Fatherland Front co-operated with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and provincial authorities to hold meetings in the three provinces of Bac Giang, Thua Thien-Hue and Lam Dong.
