NETHERLANDS
The Hague
For the second consecutive year, the Humanist Institute for International Development Cooperation (HIVOS), IUCN National Committee of The Netherlands, Wageningen University and Research Centre (WUR) and The Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs jointly celebrated World Environment day on 5 June by organizing an Environment and Development Dialogue.

These dialogues aimed to bring the agendas of environment and development organizations together and to look for partnerships and ways to collaborate. Participants from a wide variety of stakeholders - ranging from business, NGOs and government representatives - came together to discuss the main issues and opportunities regarding the linkages between environment and development.

This year, the Environment and Development Dialogue focused on product chains, like those for palm oil, timber, fish and cotton. In addition, the links in the chain of tourism sector, often not regarded as a typical products chain, were discussed. The central theme of the day was "What is the ideal product chain?" Although there is no blue print for sustainable product chains, the discussions strengthened the concept that environment and development can benefit and reinforce each other to achieve sustainable results.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, two children from Sweden will attend the World Environment Day celebrations in Algeria. They will act as messengers for the world's children who have gathered for the World Championship in Cooperation (WorldCiC), which will take place in Stockholm, Sweden from 28 May to 3 June 2006, under the auspices of Globetree. They will bring with them water united from all countries of the world, including water from space, and from the United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Kofi Annan.

In the handing over ceremony, the children will give the precious gift of 'the water' at a special ceremony during the WED in Algiers, and with it a message from the children of the WorldCiC: one of deep concern about the environment and the quality of life, and the other an affirmation of hope and peace for the planet and its inhabitants.

Their words will reflect upon the themes and goals of the WorldCiC: to create a meeting place for children and decision-makers to gather in the spirit of cooperation, and together explore and mobilize around issues of life importance to children.

AWE holds an Environment Week Exhibition each year to coincide with World Environment Day. The exhibition is an excellent opportunity to raise staff awareness on environmental issues and what they themselves can do to help preserve and protect the environment at work and at home. We are a fairly large company, with over 4,000 staff and contractors, and our sites cover hundreds of acres involving a wide range of operations. Like any other large industrial complex we are aware that some of our operations can have the potential to harm the environment and we therefore take every precaution to ensure that this does not happen. Prior to the exhibition there will be a children's environmental poster competition (with prizes) and it is amazing to see the children' interpretation on how they see their environment. All the entries are displayed at the exhibition.

Scotland
To promote World Environment Day, Edinburgh International Conference Centre Green Team is calling volunteers to join in with the clean up of the City Centre area. Tired of the litter that is bringing down the reputation of the City of Edinburgh, and sick of paying through the nose for the Council to clean up? Street Clean-Up is our opportunity to raise awareness of the public, businesses, local residents, tourists and the whole community at large to help us keep Edinburgh clean. This initiative is good for the business and local economy, the environment and the society. Members of the EICC Green Team hope that their actions will show the rest of the community how big an issue litter has become - and that dropping it is not acceptable. Not only do littered streets damage business and tourism opportunities but it also costs Scottish Council taxpayers £65 million a year to clean them. Please dispose of your litter responsibly. Note: To continue raise awareness on the adverse effect of litter on the natural environment and to our local tourism, we will provide biodegradable litter bags to all our Conference delegate packs. This is in conjunction with our Keep Scotland Tidy initiative and Visit Scotland.
