Boubyan Bank What is Boubyan? Boubyan is the largest island in the Kuwaiti coastal island chain with an area of 863 km². Our bank’s name is derived from nature and that is our starting point to what we consider as our contribution towards the environment. We at Boubyan consider ourselves a modern Islamic bank; thus it is essential in the Islamic belief that nature is a product of god that was maintained for us as human to lean on but not abuse, and as a modern approach we would like to merge that belief with our modern ways to express our gratitude and appreciation towards the environment. A schedule of activities has been set up at Boubyan bank to celebrate the environmental day; most of our events are in house and amongst our employees. This is because we believe that in order to correct our surroundings we should always start with ourselves. First of all, we will distribute an indoor plant, one for each employee,Second of all, we shall organize a painting event for the children of our staff , Third of all, our Vice-chairman shall publish a massage which will be translated bi-lingual containing a list of tips and artifacts regarding how to preserve the environment we live in. As the leader of our humble organization his words shall be heard and the staff’s morale regarding the matter shall be lifted. thanx

On the 3rd of June; the bank had launched a series of activities in the name of "WED". Starting with the distribution of bamboo shoots to all staff and ending with power reservation in the offices when not needed. By giving each staff member a part of the environment to keep at his/her desk; we were aiming to raise awareness and to erect the responsibility towards taking care of such a miniature entity of what we believe is part of the world we live in and love. Thus, if the individual learned to love and take care of that bamboo shoot, he will later be appreciative of any part of mother nature.

It was nearly 2 decades ago that EEG first launched its Waste Management Campaign of Can Collection. Due to the campaigns remarkable success & response from the community, EEG launched its paper & toner collection campaigns in 2001. As corporations, families & educational institutions battled to collect the most quantity of waste, EEG raced to launch its plastic, glass & battery collection campaigns during the ensuing years. The ambition behind EEG’s Waste Management Campaigns was to accomplish sustainable development & effectiveness in waste management towards the environment of the UAE & the region. Traditionally, EEG recognizes & appreciates the participants, winners, supporters & sponsors of its waste management programs by holding an annual Prize Giving Ceremony to celebrate the occasion & emphasise the importance of World Environment Day. This year our ceremony will be on the 3rd June 2010, in Dubai. It is a day to express thanks & appreciation for all that has been achieved in the past year, but also to addresses relevant and pertinent environmental issues that we still face & how we should tackle them. EEG will also announce & commend the winners of the Environmental Drawing Competition for their beautiful artwork reflecting environmental issues under topics that EEG had selected. EEG looks forward to this event each year, as it brings together the community under one roof that has shared & continues to share a common goal in making the world a better place.

ADRA Yemen is organizing a competition in Kharaz Refugee camp in Southern Yemen, to rid the camp of all of its plastic bags, and will be doing so in a fun and active way. Children, NGOs workers and all abled bodied inviduals are encouraged to organize each other and form teams to compete in the day's event to see which group can accumulate the most plastic bags. Prizes, which will foster environmental consciousness such as refugee made shopping bags made out of straw and from old rice bags with NGO logos printed on them, will be given to the teams who collect the highest numbers of bags. At the end of the event, all efforts will be combined to demonstrate how much litter is produced in the camp when all of the bags will be tied together to create one giant ball of plastic bags. In such a way, the amount of plastic bags used and thrown away in the camp will be more easily measured, and will also make for a cool photo :) ADRA Yemen envisions that this day will not provide an educational forum of environmental consciousness, aid in solidifying a sense of camp cohesion and create a cleaner and more healthy living environment, but will also provide an event where residents and workers can enjoy working together towards a common and tangible goal. We welcome your thoughts and comments on how to make this a more fruitful day! Wishing you a happy WED from Yemen.
