The Royal Thai Government, through the Department of Environmental Quality and Promotion celebrated World Environment Day through a 3-day event at the Royal Paragon Hall in Bangkok, from 4-6 June 2014. Princess Srirasm, the Royal Consort to the Crown Prince of Thailand, was the guest of honor and opened the WED celebration on 5 June. Thousands of participants came to attend the event – government officials, students,representatives from non-government organizations and intergovernmental organizations, including Henk Verbeek of UNEP ROAP.
The WED video message from UNEP’s Executive Director, Achim Steiner was played during the opening ceremony and was also aired at the local TV network, Channel 11. The documentary produced by Showtime, “Years of Living Dangerously”, was screened on TV monitors at the event.
A fashion show that showcased local designers’ creations using recycled materials was also organized after the opening ceremony. A market was set up at the venue where local and “green” products from communities all over Thailand were sold.
