Country celebrations - Kabul and Bamiyan, Afghanistan
With the importance of forests, UNEP in Afghanistan, in partnership with National Environment Protection Agency (NEPA), WCS and the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) undertook a series of activities for WED in both Kabul and Bamyan.

In Kabul, activities focused on Kabul University, particularly with the Department for Environment, agriculture and education. Bamyan activities focused on the 18 communities from the Shah Foladi protected area. In Bamyan, UNEP organized a tour with MAIL and NEPA national government officials to the province, and took a learning by doing approach to implementing national environmental communications strategies on the ground.

Country celebrations – Nepal
The regional office for Asia and the Pacific hosted this years WED celebrations in Nepal, and Neelima Shrestha will be spearheading a clean-up expedition between April and June 2011 to clean up approximately 9 tons of trash in and around Mount Everest mobilizing around 60 climbers. The plan is to develop a sustainable mechanism to keep the area clean including installing waste management and recycling plants in the region, training selected local communities and institutions and introducing new policies by the Government of Nepal.    

It is a multi-stakeholder project with Government of Nepal in the lead to be primarily implemented by Eco Himal Austria/Nepal and Everest Summiteers' Association Nepal.

Country celebrations - China
This year the UNEP China office coordinated a range of WED activities across China. 

30 May the UNEP China office co-sponsored China’s Environment and Health Publicity Week, along with the Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party and 8 governmental ministries. The event was launched in the Great Hall of the People.

From 5-8 June the 2011 International Student Conference on Environment and Sustainable Development, co-sponsored by UNEP and Tongji University, took place in Shanghai.

From 28-29 June the UNEP China office will also co-sponsors the launch of the 1000 Youth Environmental Ambassadors Action Programme (2011-2013) and Training for Shenzhen Youth Environmental Ambassadors, organized by the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) Environmental Education Center in Shenzhen.
