Goal: Improve access to sustainable energy in the Haiti Grand Sud Region through enhanced governance and education, renewable and rural electrification as well as sustainable cooking and heating fuels and solutions.
The Haiti Sustainable Energy Programme aims to significantly improve energy access in Haiti through a diverse portfolio of technologies adapted to the needs of rural areas. Launched in 2012, the Haiti Sustainable Energy Programme will be entering its 5th year and its 2nd phase in 2017, with a particular focus on sustainable rural energy provision through a cooperative-run mini-grid.
This programme is comprised of 5 main components:
- Grid-connected Renewable Energy
- Mini-grids
- Biomass
- Autonomous Power and Lighting
- Energy Policy and Education
Highlights of UNEP’s work in this area include:
- Construction of a solar-diesel demonstration mini-grid to be operated and managed by Haiti’s first electric cooperative, serving 1600 households with regular electricity.
- Solar-diesel hybrid micro-grid showcasing innovative second-generation metering.
- Pioneering solar and grid charged battery rental scheme supported to provide LED lighting and power 3,000 isolated households.
- Clean energy retail program funded that distributes energy-efficient solar products for families that use dirty kerosene or candles. Over 12,000 solar products sold to date.
- Solar panels installed in 12 health centers in 12 southern communes.
