The Protocol Concerning Co-operation and Development in Combating Oil Spills in the Wider Caribbean Region (the Oil Spills Protocol) was adopted concurrently with the Cartagena Convention in 1983 and entered into force in 1986.

The objectives of the Protocol are to:

  • Strengthen national and regional preparedness and response capacity of the nations and territories of the region
  • Facilitate co-operation and mutual assistance in cases of emergency to prevent and control major oil spill incidents

The Assessment and Management of Environmental Pollution (AMEP) Sub-Programme of the Caribbean Environment Programme co-ordinates activities related to the Oil Spills Protocol along with the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency, Information and Training Centre (REMPEITC-Caribe) located in the Curacao, and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
