In 2021, the Cartagena Convention Secretariat celebrated 35 years since the entry into force of the Convention. A video was commissioned to commemorate this milestone achievement and highlight the importance and benefit of the Convention and its Protocols to the governments and peoples of the Wider Caribbean.
The video was produced by Mayers Media Inc. in Barbados through financing from the Capacity Building Related to Multilateral Environmental Agreements in African, Caribbean, and the Pacific Countries project. This production will also support the efforts of the Secretariat to encourage ratification of the Convention and its Protocols by Non-Contracting Parties.
The Secretariat is pleased to announce that the video will be launched virtually on June 21, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. GMT-5.
In support of the theme for World Oceans Day 2022 (Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean), this launch will celebrate “Collective action to protect the Caribbean Sea”.

Background
The Convention for the Protection and Development of the Marine Environment of the Wider Caribbean Region (also known as the Cartagena Convention) is the first and only regionally binding treaty of its kind. It promotes the conservation and sustainable development of the Wider Caribbean's marine and coastal environment and provides the legal framework for the Caribbean Environment Programme.
It is supported by three technical agreements or protocols on oil spills, specially protected areas and wildlife and land-based sources and activities of marine pollution.
