COBSEA acts as a catalyst of actions that support regional delivery of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. An Outlook on COBSEA’s follow-up and review of ocean-related Sustainable Development Goals is being prepared, in line with the COBSEA Strategic Directions 2018-2022. This will guide COBSEA’s work especially in relation to Sustainable Development Goal 14.1 on marine pollution; 14.2 on sustainable management of coastal ecosystems and 14.5 on marine protected areas.
A regional workshop on COBSEA follow-up and review of ocean-related SDGs was held 11-12 December 2019 in Manila, Philippines, organized in collaboration with the Philippines Department of Environment and Natural Resources, to guide further development and finalization of the Outlook document.
COBSEA countries presented progress in implementing ocean-related Sustainable Development Goals. The workshop took stock of current monitoring and reporting on Sustainable Development Goals, associated challenges and opportunities to address these. Priority actions to be pursued through COBSEA were further refined, including in relation to indicator-based assessment, capacity building and exchange of best practice. On the basis of this workshop the Outlook document is now being finalized, for consideration at the 25th Intergovernmental Meeting of COBSEA. The workshop also included a session to take stock of and discuss project development addressing priority actions in COBSEA’s Strategic Directions 2018-2022.
