The ambition is to organize interactive leadership dialogues, and they will therefore be held live. Speakers are encouraged to limit their statements to no longer than 2 minutes. Pre-recorded ore written statements are also welcome by Member States and stakeholders alike, and should be sent to the secretariat (unepsgb@unep.org) well in advance of UNEA-5. Such statements will not be aired during the leadership dialogue but instead made available on the UNEA 5 website.
Representatives from UNEP accredited organizations may register for the leadership dialogue. Given the online format and limited time available, however, a speaking slot cannot be guaranteed, and priority will be given to Ministers of Environment in the dialogue. Any representative from the civil society, as well as from the public at large, may of course also follow the leadership dialogue online as it will be web-streamed through the UNEP website.
Yes – however, for any speaking requests, priority will be given to attending Ministers of Environment in the dialogue. Member State delegations are encouraged to indicate the preferred date and timing of their Ministers participation no the leadership dialogue to the UNEP secretariat (sgb-unep@unep.org) at their earliest convenience.
No. Both sessions are substantially identical and will discuss the same theme “Contribution of the environmental dimension of sustainable development to building a resilient and inclusive post-pandemic world.” Two sessions have been organized at different times to allow for as many participants as possible from different time zones.
The leadership dialogue will take place on the afternoon session of 22 February and the morning session of 23 February, under the theme “Contribution of the environmental dimension of sustainable development to building a resilient and inclusive post-pandemic world”. The discussion is guided by a concept note, with three guiding questions. The leadership dialogue is open to all heads of delegations of a country or accredited organization, but Environment Ministers will be priority as speakers. All participants for the leadership dialogues need to be registered to UNEA5 through the registration link.
Yes, stakeholder representatives from civils society can participate in the online session of UNEA-5 as observers, provided that they belong to an organization that is accredited to UNEP. However, the online session of UNEA-5 is first and foremost an intergovernmental meeting, and representatives will only be given the floor at the discretion of the Chair of the meeting. Stakeholders will also have the opportunity to engage actively in the preparations for the resumed session of UNEA-5 in February 2022.
There will be no formal side events during the online session of UNEA-5. However, the meeting is expected to be preceded by several informal online events which will be announced and made available to all interested parties on the UNEA-5 website in due course.
Yes, the meeting will be streamed online with the possibility to watch and listen to the discussions in all six UN languages, through links directly from the UNEA-5 website.

All delegates and participants, including representatives of United Nations entities, specialized agencies and other intergovernmental organizations and international non-governmental organizations, must register online in advance of the meeting, and upload a PDF copy of a signed letter of accreditation. The signed letter of accreditation should be on official letterhead and include the name(s) of all delegate(s) or representative(s).
