Focus sur la nature et la biodiversité

La nature est la ligne de vie de l'humanité. La santé, l'alimentation, l'économie et le bien-être de l'homme dépendent de la nature. Pourtant, la nature est en crise. Un million des quelque 8 millions d'espèces de plantes et d'animaux que compte la planète sont menacées d'extinction. Par ailleurs, la dégradation des écosystèmes affecte le bien-être de 40 % de la population mondiale.

Le focus sur la nature et la biodiversité met en lumière des mises à jour provenant de l'ensemble du système des Nations unies, de partenaires et d'autres acteurs, contribuant à attirer l'attention sur la nécessité d'un avenir juste, prospère et durable pour tous.

Nature is staging a comeback: UN recognizes seven World Restoration Flagships

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) have named seven initiatives from Africa, Latin America, the Mediterranean, and South Asia as UN World Restoration Flagships. These initiatives include ecosystems at the tipping point of outright degradation resulting from wildfires, drought, deforestation, and pollution. They are now eligible for technical and financial UN support.

The World Restoration Flagships awards are part of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration – led by UNEP and FAO – which aims to prevent, halt, and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent and in every ocean.

UN Environment Assembly to take on climate change, nature loss, pollution

Delegates will gather for the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6), the world’s top decision-making body on the environment from 26 February to 1 March 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya.

The assembly brings together 193 Member States, intergovernmental organizations, the broader UN system, civil society groups, the scientific community and the private sector to shape global environmental policy.

Delegates are expected to discuss how multilateralism can help tackle the triple planetary crisis of climate changenature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.

GEF family of funds set for ambitious investments in nature

The inaugural board meeting of the new Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF) will be held during the 66th Global Environment Facility Council meeting from February 5–9.

The Global Environment Facility Council will decide on over $1 billion in funding for climate change adaptation, biodiversity, ocean health, pollution management, and other initiatives.

In Bhutan, the endangered Bengal tiger is making a comeback

The number of Bengal tigers has increased by 27% since 2015, with 131 now calling Bhutan home. Conservationists, who have seen wild tiger numbers worldwide drop in recent decades, praised the survey, which was done with the support of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The initiatives signify the vanguard of hope for the planet, representing a collective commitment to safeguard 30% of Earth's lands and seas while restoring 20% from the grips of degradation.

NBSAP Forum now available in French, Russian and Spanish

The increasing pressure on the planet's biodiversity calls for an urgent need to collaborate and take action. The UN Development Programme, in partnership with the Convention on Biological Diversity and UNEP, have released the ‌National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAP) Forum in French, Spanish, and Russian.

Oriented towards the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the NBSAP Forum is a valuable platform for policymakers and practitioners to exchange knowledge, share best practices, and find the resources they need to take action for nature.
