Strengthening Institutional Capacity of Countries in Environmental Law

In Environmental law and governance

UN Environment aims at strengthening institutional capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition in environmental law and institutions by conducting and supporting training programmes at the global and regional level; support inter-regional forums for sharing expertise and developing guidance materials; and allow UN Environment to respond to requests from and needs of countries to provide technical assistance, advisory services and training at the national level.

UN Environment initiates and provides substantive support to environmental law related initiatives at three levels:

(i) Global training programmes, including the annual UN Environmental/University of Eastern Finland (UEF) UN Environment Course on Multilateral Environmental Agreements;

(ii) Regional including Inter-regional Initiatives and Partner Training Programmes; and

(iii) Technical Assistance and Legal Advisory Services, as per national requests, to assist the Development and Implementation of National Environmental Law and related Institutions initiatives.

Through the aforementioned activities, UN Environment will enhance knowledge and skills in environmental law, and to strengthen institutions to enhance the capacity of countries to comply with their international environmental obligations including Multilateral Environmental Agreements.

UN Environment is also committed to provide legal guidance materials that will be made accessible by more users as environmental law information for decision-making, capacity building and for reference. We strive to respond to the needs of Governments from developing countries and countries with economies in transition to enhance their institutional capacity to develop, enforce and implement environmental law including multilateral environmental agreements.
