Sonja works on the GEF Global Climate Mitigation projects, as well as is the focal point for the GCF projects in the Unit.
She supports project development and implementation of global projects focused on climate technology solutions and low-carbon development. Sonja has over 10 years of experience working in the environment sector in countries across the globe. Before joining the Climate Mitigation Unit in January 2022, Sonja worked with IRENA in their Project Facilitation and Support Division and with UNEP between 2014 and 2018 in various positions. Prior to her international experience, she worked at an environment and engineering consultancy firm on project development and environmental and social assessments in her home country of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sonja has a post-master’s degree in Sustainable Energy Systems from Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon and a master’s degree from Lund University.
