As part of UN Environment Global Mercury Partnership support to the countries developing National Action Plans (NAPs) to reduce mercury use in Artisanal and Small Scale Gold Mining (ASGM); a regional African workshop on “Developing Baseline Estimates for the Artisanal and Small Scale Gold Mining sector: Introduction to the UN Environment toolkit” took place on 22 May 2017 in Nairobi, Kenya. The workshop introduced a comprehensive and scalable methodology on how to generate ASGM baseline estimates for NAPs. Moreover, the hands-on session familiarized participants with the complexity of setting country specific strategy for the data collection and management.
This workshop was followed (23-24 May 2017) by the ASGM African Regional Forum on Practical Considerations for the Development of National Action Plans for ASGM, presented by the European Environmental Bureau / Zero Mercury Working Group in cooperation with the Global Mercury Partnership and UN Environment.
