As part of the Italian Polar Research Programme (PNRA) Italy performed (2012-2014) an intensive campaigns in Ny-Alesund on the Svalbard Islands at the Italian research site and at DOME-C in Antarctica (Italian-French bi-lateral program). The aim of this project was to investigate on mercury depletion mechanisms that affect the transfer of mercury from the atmosphere to surface snow in both polar areas.
The overall goal of the UNEP Global Mercury Partnership is to protect human health and the environment from the releases of mercury.
