NOWPAP was invited to the marine policy session of the World Ocean Forum on 27 October 2022 in Busan, Republic of Korea. The 2022 World Ocean Forum is the 16th edition of the Davos Forum in the ocean field. The Forum was organized by the Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea, the Busan Metropolitan Government, and Busan Daily News. The theme of the Forum is "Ocean as Uniters, Pursuing Global Cooperation for the good of the planet”.
In the marine policy session, Woo Su-Han, a Professor at Chung-Ang University, presented the need to organize integrated marine governance. He suggested setting up an ocean committee at the national level. Zhang Haiwen, Director-General of the China Institute for Marine Affairs of the Ministry of Natural Resources, presented the way to respond to challenges from oceans. She recommended enhancing bilateral cooperation between China and the Republic of Korea. Charles Colgan, Professor of Middlebury Institute of International Studies, introduced the composition and function of the National Maritime Commission of the United States. Sylvie Dufour, Professor of the French Museum of Natural History Ocean Institute of Alliance Sorbonne University, presented the importance of scientific research for knowledge-based policy-making.
Ning Liu, the Programme Officer of NOWPAP, was invited to join the panel discussion in this session. He took Korea's best practice in marine litter management as an example to highlight the importance of international conventions, national legislation and regulation, scientific research, and participation of the private sector, nongovernmental organizations, and local community in ocean governance.
Nam Jungho, the Senior Research Fellow of Korea Maritime Institute, chaired this session and highlighted the important role of NOWPAP in regional ocean governance.
