The Korea Global Forum for Peace 2021 was organised from 31 August to 2 September 2021. The Forum was hosted by the Ministry of Unification (MOU) of the Republic of Korea. The key aim was to discuss the peace and unification process in the Korean Peninsula. As one of the regional players, NOWPAP was invited to present its activities at the Forum. NOWPAP was represented by RCU.
In the "Inter-Korean Cooperation in Maritime and Fisheries Sector for Implementing SDG14" session, the NOWPAP representative participated online, and briefly introduced the structure of NOWPAP and key ongoing NOWPAP activities, including marine biodiversity conservation, environmental monitoring and assessment, pollution prevention, maritime disaster preparedness and responses and marine litter. Several successful examples from NOWPAP were showcased at the end of the presentation. Following this presentation, in the same session, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) introduced its activities in DPR Korea. The Global Fishing Watch also presented their results of illegal fishing monitoring in the Northwest Pacific region. Participants from the Korea Maritime Institute, the Korea's Institute of Fisheries Science, and Hanns Seidel Foundation Korea provided their comments on the presentations delivered during this session.
The Korea Global Forum for Peace has brought together researchers, experts from international organisations, as well as officials from governmental agencies and representatives of non-governmental organisations from many countries since 2010 to discuss issues of engaging with North Korea and approaches to lasting peace in the Korean Peninsula.
The year 2021 marks the “30th anniversary of Inter-Korean Basic Agreement” and the “30th anniversary of South and North Korea’s simultaneous admission to the UN”.
