The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted during the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), represents an ambitious roadmap toward achieving the global vision of a harmonious world with nature by 2050.
From 5 to 8 September, the CBD Secretariat organised the Sustainable Ocean Initiative (SOI) Capacity-Building Workshop for East, South, and Southeast Asia in Seoul with logistical support from the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea (MABIK). This essential gathering received financial backing from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea (ROK).
The workshop drew participation from approximately 40 delegates from East, South, and Southeast Asian nations, including China, Bangladesh, Japan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. During the event, the CBD Secretariat provided an overview of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. At the same time, organisations like COBSEA, NOWPAP, IUCN, ASEAN Biodiversity Center, IUCN, and PEMSEA showcased their successes in biodiversity conservation efforts within the region and opportunities for collaboration with countries in the Framework's implementation.
The workshop featured two breakout sessions designed to delve into the region's challenges, opportunities, and priorities in achieving ocean-related targets in alignment with regional goals and strategies. National representatives shared thoughts on developing strategies and action plans to implement the Global Biodiversity Framework in marine and coastal areas.
Throughout the event, participants engaged in in-depth discussions on the challenges and opportunities linked to the Framework's implementation. Draft national action plans were pivotal in facilitating the exchange of ideas on attaining the objectives outlined in the Global Biodiversity Framework.
Importantly, the workshop served as a valuable platform for regional organisations like COBSEA and NOWPAP to engage in a dialogue with national participants, fostering collaboration and brainstorming sessions to enhance the Framework's implementation further.
