Amman, Jordan 8 July 2022 – The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) OzonAction Compliance Assistance Programme (CAP) West Asia, met with Jordan’s Government officials and representatives from institutions in Amman, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan from 28-30 June 2022, to review the ongoing projects, activities, and achievements within the framework of the Montreal Protocol (MP) in Jordan. The agenda included ways of strengthening cooperation with the national ministries and institutions in the related fields. It is worth noting Jordan has a long experience in successfully implementing projects and activities under the MP and is one of the pilot countries in the region to ratify the Kigali Amendment (KA) and carry out the Kigali Implementation Plan.
The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Environment, Dr. Mohammad Kashashneh, and representatives from the National Ozone Unit (NOU) welcomed the physical visit of Mr Khaled Klaly, UNEP Regional Montreal Protocol Coordinator for West Asia, and Ms Naela Aldaoud, UNEP Programme Management Officer, West Asia, after two years of no physical contact due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Discussions were centered around enhancing cooperation between the two entities in developing a roadmap for the NOU and empowering its capacity to fulfill the country’s obligations under the MP in particular post-COVID-19. UNEP as an Implementing Agency (IA) assured the Ministry of its continued support to Jordan in project implementation through the CAP.
Subsequently, and in line with UNEP’s role as an IA, Mr Khaled Klaly and Ms Aldaoud met with the Director General Assistant for Technical Affairs, Eng. Ibrahim Al-Tarawneh at the Vocational Training Corporation where they were briefed about Jordan’s experience in training and licensing technicians and the areas of cooperation in licensing refrigeration and air conditioning technicians.
Further, Mr Klaly and Ms Aldaoud also convened a meeting with the Director General of the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO), Eng. Abeer Al-Zhair, and other JSMO members. UNEP was briefed on the process of developing and updating the national standards in Jordan in line with the global trends and the latest publications in the sectors of refrigeration, air conditioning, and thermal insulation. UNEP and JSMO further discussed future collaboration, through which JSMO would share their experience regionally and establish cooperation with standards institutions in other West Asia countries within the framework of the MP and according to the KA requirements.
To conclude their mission in Jordan, UNEP’s representatives were received at the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) where they met with the Vice President/Executive Director of the Sustainable Solutions Sector, Eng. Rafat Assi, and a group of the Society’s experts. The RSS gave a brief overview of its sectors and its contribution at the national and regional levels, the projects it implements, and the services it provides within the framework of the MP. UNEP and the RSS also discussed areas of mutual interest and future cooperation opportunities in relation to the MP in Jordan as well as neighbouring countries in the West Asia region.
UNEP’s mission to Jordan is part of the Regional Network service that OzonAction's Compliance Assistance Programme (CAP) provides to Article 5 (developing) countries as part of its role as an IA of the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol.
