Her dedication to fostering opportunities for women in the Heating, Ventilation, Air- Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) sector shines through her role in INWIC, a platform described by Colleen Keyworth as "a match made in heaven" for her passion.
From Reluctance to Passion
Colleen's initial disinterest in the HVACR sector, stemming from her early exposure through her family business, is a vivid starting point. "I actually did not want to be involved whatsoever in the HVACR sector," she confesses. This reluctance, however, was transformed through the encouragement of a mentor who saw Colleen’s potential beyond her own recognition. It was this mentor's belief in her abilities and the foundation laid by her family that prompted Colleen to reconsider her path. Opting to delve into the marketing side rather than the contracting side of the business, she discovered a newfound passion for the industry and its community. "I love the people; I'm extremely passionate about the people," Colleen reflects, emphasizing the interconnectedness and warmth of the HVACR community that eventually won her over. Her impact within the HVACR industry extends beyond mere business success; she has been a pivotal figure in promoting environmental awareness and sustainability. Her work towards the Montreal Protocol and various environmental movements showcases her commitment to making a difference.
Moreover, Colleen is passionate about opening career opportunities within the HVACR sector, including through INWIC’s networking and mentorship programs, to those previously unaware of its potential. By highlighting the lucrative and impactful nature of careers within this field, she aims to shift perceptions and encourage a new generation to consider paths less travelled. Her efforts to alter the industry's advertising strategies to be more inclusive and welcoming to all genders are part of a larger vision to diversify the workforce and challenge stereotypes.
Leveraging Gender as an Advantage
Colleen's path in the HVACR sector is distinctively shaped by her outlook on gender roles within the industry. Instead of seeing her gender as an obstacle, she views it as her greatest strength, overturning the conventional expectations in a field predominantly occupied by men. Her push for greater inclusivity and equality serves as a powerful message urging the sector to welcome a more varied workforce. "It's a lot of work," she concedes, recognizing the enduring stereotypes, yet she remains hopeful about the possibility of transformation.
Colleen has played a key role in promoting gender inclusivity in the HVACR industry by working to reduce gender biases and making job advertisements more welcoming to everyone. Her position as a woman in the sector has enabled her to challenge and change existing norms, leading to a more diverse and inclusive workforce.
Colleen’s message for girls and women
Colleen Keyworth's story culminates in a powerful message for girls and young women considering their future careers: "When dealing with conflict or working with people in general, always ask yourself: 'Would you rather be right or successful?' Because you can't usually have both." This question, in her words, is a lesson in recognizing which win is more important, your pride or your ability to encourage others to collaborate with you, especially when working in groups.
