National Action Plan for integrated waste management in Burkina Faso

In 2018, the government of Burkina Faso, along with the help of SWITCH Africa Green, began the process of developing a National Action Plan on Integrated Waste Management. This was done as part of the Country Implementation Plan and in line with the vision of transitioning to circular economy. The plan aims to, amongst other things, propose solutions for systemic change that generates new business opportunities and economic, environmental and social benefits for its citizen.

After a series of stakeholder consultations, validation meetings and coordination forums, the final strategy and action plan were confirmed in November 2019. The plan promotes the principle of a closed-loop material cycle to maximize recovery and reuse and also encourages a systematic shift that generates business and economic opportunities and provides environmental and social benefits, such as social equity, resource security, pollution prevention and job creation.
