Biogas is a type of alternative energy source that is naturally produced from the decomposition of organic waste, thereby reducing the harmful health impacts of waste ending up in landfills or sewage sites. Ghana serves as role model for other SWITCH Africa Green countries for integrated waste management, especially when it comes to biogas technology.
In this regard, the Ghana National Cleaner Production Centre project was a grantee of SWITCH Africa Green through its biogas plant. One of the project’s outputs was the development of a biogas calculator - software that calculates greenhouse gas emissions and also measures and guides the planning, design and construction of biogas plants based on the amount of raw material going into the system.
The project also developed a handful of training modules on all aspects of biogas technology, including health and safety, construction and installation, and the preparation and implementation of a simple biogas business plan. These modules were designed to assist artisans in creating and operating a biogas construction business. To fine tune and test the training modules, SWITCH Africa Green formalized cooperation with the GNCPC, through the Environmental Protection Agency of Ghana, to conduct three training sessions on biogas technology for public buildings, industrial facilities and residential use. SWITCH Africa Green facilitated the trained artisans to form the Biogas Association of Ghana that has continued to promoted biogas technologies in Ghana.
