Through the SWITCH Africa Green programme, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) partnered to deliver, for the first time, an interactive e-learning course especially tailored to the regional context of Africa.
The course aimed to assist high- and mid-level civil servants in the African region (e.g., national focal points for the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns and the SWITCH Africa Green programme) in developing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating policies that support a transition towards sustainable consumption and production (SCP).
Participants learned about different concepts and facets of sustainable consumption and production, as well as regional, national and sector-specific opportunities to advance low-carbon, resource-efficient and socially responsible production and consumption, and about related challenges. They also developed basic skills for applying the concept of sustainable consumption and production in a real-world economic, policy and/or personal context.
The English-language course had 65 participants from 18 African countries, while the French-language course had 43 participants from 19 countries. A majority of the participants came from the government sector.
In terms of participants’ satisfaction, 100% of respondents rated the course as very or mostly useful and 98% stated that the course fulfilled their interests and expectations. In terms of the achievement of specific learning objectives, respondents ranked highest their ability to “define the concept of SCP and explain its value for sustainable development and the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda” (98% responded “fully or mostly achieved”), followed by “distinguish key elements of effective policy planning in support of SCP” (96%).
