This side-event was designed to present a Mediterranean perspective on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as a regional contribution to the global deliberations that the 2022 UN Ocean Conference will host.

The side-event aimed to:
- explore pathways to accelerate the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by highlighting the strategies, instruments and tools that UNEP/MAP has developed with the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention in the pursuit of sustainable development in the Mediterranean region.
- demonstrate the extent to which the 2030 Agenda and the 17 SDGs, as a universally accepted blueprint for sustainability and resilience, have been integrated into the work of the UNEP/MAP-Barcelona Convention system (notably through the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development - MSSD).
- offer insights into the levers of transformative change that decision-makers can use to address the triple environmental crisis while scoring points in the achievement of the SDGs.
- highlight major initiatives, such as PAMEx, programmes and regional developments aimed at transitioning to sustainability across economic sectors and bolstering resilience to potentially disruptive shocks.
