MedUrbanTools

Title of the Flagship Initiative as it appears in the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD)

“Create a sustainable urban toolbox for the Mediterranean, with a view to planning cities that will work for everyone, in order to make them inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”

Objectives

This Flagship Initiative is linked to Objective 3 of the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD): “Planning and managing sustainable Mediterranean cities”.

Context

MedUrbanTools is a Mediterranean sustainable urban development knowledge sharing toolbox. Designed as an open platform to underpin knowledge-sharing, it features a user-friendly interface offering technical content and multimedia materials based on best available practices, thus promoting urban analyses while inspiring new initiatives.

MedUrbanTools has been growing significantly since July 2017, when it was first presented during the 17th Meeting of the MCSD:

Implementation

The toolbox offers three main sections:

  • Cases, Voices and Resources, including good practices;
  • Expert interviews;
  • Replicable methodological tools.

The platform covers the following topics:

  1. Environment and Climate Change;
  2. Waste management, prevention and reduction;
  3. Energy Transition;
  4. Urban Strategies and Local Governance;
  5. Economic Development;
  6. Urban Planning;
  7. Sustainable Mobility;
  8. Innovation;
  9. Culture and Identity.

The emphasis on Sustainable Mobility and Energy Transition recognizes their importance as important pillars of urban development with economic, social and environmental ramifications.

The sub-categories identify resources for both large metropolitan areas and small cities to address these issues.

Achievements

The platform holds more than 170 best practices, 40 videos of experts and 40 replicable methodologies on different topics concerning Mediterranean cities, including the experiences of 37 cities or metropolitan areas.
