IMEO History

In Energy

IMEO is built upon the successful implementation of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition’s (CCAC’s) Mineral Methane Initiative. Since 2014, the CCAC Mineral Methane Initiative has focused on three projects to reduce methane emissions: the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP), the Methane Science Studies (MSS), and the Global Methane Alliance (GMA). The purpose of these initiatives is to achieve global methane emissions reductions from the oil and gas sector of 45% by 2025 and 60-75% by 2030.

IMEO was funded to fill the need of comprehensive data collection, as gaps in the data landscape limit the ability to fully understand the scope of the methane emissions problem, and to target strategic mitigation action. The data problem today is that available methane data is largely based on generic emissions factor-based calculations, which have been repeatedly proven to dramatically underestimate measured methane emissions levels. To address this problem, it is essential to have wider-ranging reporting from the industry that is based on direct measurements, and greater integration of data, including from satellites. This will enable countries and companies to identify and act on the most important opportunities for methane mitigation.
