UNEP Releases Report on the Sochi Olympics

At the invitation of the Government of the Russian Federation and in partnership with the Sochi 2014 Olympic Organizing Committee, a UNEP expert team undertook a mission to Sochi from 28 to 30 January 2010 to assess preparations in the lead up to the games. The mission produced a report, which was prepared on the request of the Russian government, presenting key findings and recommendations. The mission involved site visits along the construction path of the combined road/railway and other sites in the region (including the Biathlon venue and Olympic Village in the mountain cluster, Gasprom complex, Rosa Khuta).

CITES to discuss initiatives to dismantle criminal networks involved in tiger and rhino poaching

Doha, 15 March 2010 - Delegates and enforcement experts attending the CITES summit in Qatar will discuss this week the perilous state of tigers in the wild and the nature of poaching and illegal trade in tigers. The CITES Secretariat, in conjunction with INTERPOL, is calling for countries to submit information about crime against tigers, so that it can be analysed and effective anti-poaching strategies developed. In the early 1900s, tigers were found throughout Asia and numbered over 100,000.
