In resolution 5/14, UNEA-5.2 requested the UNEP Executive Director to convene an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, based on a comprehensive approach that addresses the full life cycle of plastic.
In response to resolution 5/14, the UNEP Executive Director convened an Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group (OEWG) to prepare for the work of the INC. The meeting was held from 30 May to 1 June 2022 in Dakar, Senegal in a hybrid format.
