Mr. Christopher Corbin, Coordinator of the UNEP Cartagena Convention Secretariat participated in a Counter Pollution Workshop organized by the Maritime and Coast Guard Agency of the United Kingdom from 27-29th November in Miami, Florida.  The workshop, while targeting primarily UK Overseas Territories also afforded an opportunity for sharing of experiences and best practices of neighboring countries in the Wider Caribbean Region.

The SPAW Regional Activity Center (SPAW-RAC) has successfully implemented the Second Meeting of Managers of SPAW-listed Protected Areas, advancing the creation of the SPAW-listed MPAs Network. As requested by the Contracting Parties of the SPAW Protocol under the Cartagena Convention and in line with decisions made during SPAW-COP12, SPAW-RAC has been coordinating a regional effort to establish this network. The goal is to better understand and address the needs of protected area managers, ultimately enhancing the effectiveness of SPAW-listed MPAs.

The Fourth OECS Blue Economy Roundtable took place in Saint Lucia on October 15 and 16, 2024. This year the OECS Commission partnered with UNEP Cartagena Convention Secretariat and other partners such as the World Maritime University, and International Conservation Caucus Foundation – ICCF to focus on identifying and navigating the diverse pathways needed to develop blue economies, ensure policy coherence, and meet both regional and international commitments.

The Prevention of Marine Litter in the Caribbean Sea (PROMAR) Inception Workshop will convene 14th February - 17th February 2023. PROMAR is financed by the Government of Germany through the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and is managed through a partnership between German NGO adelphi as Lead Implementer and the UNEP Cartagena Convention Secretariat at Implementing Partner.

The Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA), one of the Regional Activity Centres (RACs) for the Cartagena Convention’s Protocol Concerning Pollution from Land-Based Sources and Activities (LBS), will host a three-day workshop on coastal eutrophication and harmful algal blooms. The index of coastal eutrophication is reported under Sustainable Development Goal 14.1.1.

At this online webinar, the main conclusions and recommendations of the report ‘Stronger together: The role of regional instruments in strengthening global governance of marine plastic pollution’ will be presented. The report is the final product of a research project which analysed the role of regional instruments in combating marine plastic litter and identified linkages of these regional efforts with a new global agreement on marine plastic litter.

The impacts know no boundaries, spanning the national, regional and even international scale.
