Workshop
This Workshop aims to discuss the development of an AmeriGEO oil spill information system for the Wider Caribbean. In recent years, the Wider Caribbean region has faced challenges from oil spill incidents including a recent event where oil washed up on thousands of kilometers of Brazil’s coastline from an unknown source and multiple spills originating from Trinidad and Tobago. Illegal dumping of oil-contaminated waste by ships operating in the region is also a common occurrence.
In light of the rapidly approaching hurricane season and the current global and regional health and economic climate, this month’s webinar focuses on building resilience in Caribbean Countries through nature-based solutions to climate change and disaster resilience and recovery efforts. According to The Ocean Conservancy, 8m tonnes of plastic is entering the ocean every year. The impact on the ocean is well publicised, and encouraging steps are being taken to eliminate plastic waste and pollution. The future of plastics in the ocean will be determined by the way plastics are managed on land – the problem must be addressed throughout the supply chain, and end to end solutions found.
Campaign
Antigua and Barbuda, Norway and the Maldives will launch the new Group of Friends to Combat Plastic Pollution on World Ocean Day, 8 June 2020. Plastic production has skyrocketed, going from 2 million metric tons in 1950 to 380 million metric tons in 2015 and is expected to further triple in the next two decades.

The Secretariat of the Basel Convention will be hosting a webinar as a follow up on the first meeting of its Plastic Waste Partnership Working Group that was held from 2nd to 5th March 2020 in Seychelles. As a member of this Working Group, the Cartagena Convention Secretariat was represented at this meeting which successfully concluded with agreements on several items, notably the establishment of project groups and consensus on activities that will be implemented by each project group. The 21st Global Annual Meeting of the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans will be held in Berlin, Germany October 3 to 5 2019. The meeting will be hosted by the Secretariat of the Helsinki Convention and will be held back to back with the Marine Regions Forum.

According the World Health Organization, 7 million people die prematurely every year as a direct or indirect result of air pollution. In addition, 93% of children live in areas where the air pollution levels are above the recommended standards of the World Health Organization.
