Domestic wastewater is the No. 1 point source of pollution entering the Caribbean Sea. Obligations under the LBS Protocol for wastewater are provided in ANNEX III of the Protocol.
Overview
The management of domestic wastewater is a priority for our Pollution Sub-programme. Our activities include support to the Global Partnership for Nutrients Management (GPNM) and the Global Wastewater Initiative (GWI) of UN Environment's Global Programme of Action.
We were also the regional executing agency for the GEF-CReW: Caribbean Regional Fund for Wastewater Management which improved wastewater management in the Wider Caribbean Region from 2011 to 2017. Now, together with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the Organisation of the American States (OAS) we co-execute the follow-up GEF CReW+ project, aiming to implement innovative, technical, small-scale solutions using an integrated water and wastewater management approach in 18 countries of the Wider Caribbean Region.
